As the workweek for most begins to wind down, Sunday looms large for preachers and Bible class teachers. As sermons are polished and final tweaks are made to class material, it’s worth taking a step back and asking, “For what are we aiming?” Could I suggest the apostle Paul’s summary statement to Timothy?
The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Tim 1:5)
The New American Standard translates it, “the goal of our instruction.”
It’s the preacher’s aim, the teacher’s aim, the goal of shepherds and parents. We are aiming for love. The goal is to use God’s word to stir up love that issues from purified hearts and good consciences, leading to lives lived with sincere faith.
That’s what we’re aiming for as the Lord’s day approaches. We’re looking forward to seeing you Sunday, with open Bibles and eager hearts.
