  • FREE eBook Deals of the Day: Unfriend Yourself: Three Days to Detox, Discern, and Decide About Social Media (Kyle Tennant) – regularly $3.99; Love Works: Seven Timeless Principles for Effective Leaders (Joel Manby) – regularly $19.99.
  • CHEAP eBook Deal of the Day: The Purpose of Man: Designed to Worship (A. W. Tozer) – $3.99 (73% off).
  • Andy Sochor writes, “Whether we like it or not, professional athletes, like other celebrities, can have a big influence on the thinking of people in society. This announcement will only further the efforts to normalize the practice of homosexuality in people’s minds. In light of this news, it is important that Christians remember a few things.”
  • Gary Henry warns, “Just as agitation gets in the way of carefulness, pride gets in the way of worship. Nothing in the spiritual life is more important than awe and utter respect before God, and so if pride hinders us from being reverent, it’s a deadly danger to our souls.”
  • Scientific American reports, “You and I can access billions of Web pages, post blogs, write code for our own killer apps—in short, do anything we want on the Web—all for free! And we’ve enjoyed free reign because 20 years ago, today, Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and his employer, the CERN physics lab in Geneva, published a statement that made the nascent ‘World Wide Web’ technology available to every person, company and institution with no royalty or restriction.”

Our culture and its dialogue are absolutely immersed in two enormous lies.

  1. If you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must either hate them, fear them, or be intolerantly and irrationally prejudiced against them.
  2. If you love someone, you must agree with or silently tolerate everything they believe and do.

These are lies that disciples of Christ simply cannot afford to believe. Why?

  1. These lies fail to acknowledge the objective standard given by our Creator.
  2. These lies elevate our definition of happiness above God’s prescription for holiness.
  3. These lies distort the nature of God’s written revelation to mankind.

This sermon seeks to hold these increasingly common lies under the microscope of divine revelation.

For those of us who find it easy to be our own biggest physical critics…

“I’m not sure I want to be married to you anymore.”

“Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:28-31)

If no commandment is greater than these, no environment needs them more than our homes. When God first commanded the children of Israel to love him with all their heart, soul, and might, he directly attached his expectations to everyday life at home.

“These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deut 6:6-9)

By God’s design, home is “where the children are led to know Christ in his beauty who loves them so.” Home, as God envisioned, is “where the altar fires burn and glow” (B. B. McKinney). Home may be “where the heart is,” but nothing matters more in Christian homes than the heart of God.

The home was God’s idea, but life at home isn’t always perfect. Or easy. Or pleasant. Or like we expected it to be.

On this first day of Spring, might the Bible provide some help? Many of us know it’s time for a good “Spring cleaning” around our physical houses. But what about our homes? Our marriages? Our parent-child relationships? Our individual lives of integrity?

Here’s a Spring Cleaning Checklist to get us thinking about the issues that matter most:

  • What sort of clutter has built up? (Luke 8:14)
  • Is your garbage disposal working? (James 1:21)
  • Are your mirrors clean? (James 1:22-25)
  • Are you keeping an eye on your filter? (Phil 4:8)
  • Is your alarm system functional? (Prov 22:3)
  • What needs to be thrown away for good? (Gal 5:19-21)
  • How’s the laundry coming? (Col 3:5-14)
  • Are you getting the fresh air you need? (1 Cor 13:4-8)
  • Have all the necessary locks been installed? (Eph 5:3-4)
  • Are things as secure as they need to be? (Prov 4:23)
  • How’s the foundation? (Matt 7:24-27)

Sunrise

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. (Rev 6:9-11)

On this side of death, there are seasons wherein we struggle to maintain confidence in an all-present, all-powerful, all-knowing God who reigns supreme with perfect power and complete authority.

On this side of death, there are stormy days and nights that threaten to overwhelm our feeble grasps on the anchor of a God who is beyond reproach in his holiness and love.

On this side of death, there are heartbreaking moments that shake the very foundations of our faith in a God who is true and worthy of trust.

On this side of death, believers have no choice but to walk by faith (2 Cor 5:7).

But on the other side of death, how different is the story!

Do Miraculous Gifts Exist Today If Not Why Not

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed… There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Cor 12:1-7)

There is no doubt that miraculous gifts of the Spirit existed and were employed by first-century disciples of Christ. But do they still exist? If not, why not?

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way. (1 Cor 12:27-31)

What was this more excellent way? What made it more excellent? And how do 1 Corinthians 12-13 apply to us today?

This sermon uses the New Testament to explore what God has revealed and preserved concerning miraculous spiritual gifts. It was delivered on October 28, 2012 as Part 7 in a series of sermons on the Holy Spirit.

WHO AM I - What Will Define You in 2013

Here’s a question worthy of being asked at the end of 2012: From what or whom are you drawing your sense of identity? Your identity is your sense of self–those things that make you, you.

From the standpoint of this world and popular culture:

  • You are a body.
  • You are a slave to your background.
  • You are defined by your relationships, or lack thereof.
  • Your value is determined by your stuff.
  • Your most important asset is your reputation.

But have you considered your Creator’s input? It sounds starkly different.
