A God-Breathed Message to Preachers on a Tuesday

Preachers did important work on Sunday. As those charged with teaching what accords with sound doctrine (Tit 2:1):

  • We challenged older men to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness (Tit 2:2).
  • We taught older women to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine, but teachers of what is good (Tit 2:3).
  • We encouraged young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled (Tit 2:4-5).
  • We urged younger men to be self-controlled (Tit 2:6).

Preachers did important work on Sunday. Lord willing, we’ll have another opportunity in five days to teach more of what accords with sound doctrine.

In the meantime, brothers, let’s make sure that we don’t neglect Titus 2:7-8. We taught foundational truths from Titus 2:1-6 and expected others to listen. Are we listening to the Spirit of God as he commands us:

Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.

The brethren expected you to show up on Sunday. But be about more than showing up on Sundays. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works on Tuesdays.

This coming Sunday, the brethren will expect you to show integrity, dignity, and sound speech in your teaching. But be about more than representing those ideals from the pulpit. Show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned on Facebook and Twitter throughout the week.

Plan purposefully, prepare prayerfully, proceed positively, pursue persistently the goal of teaching what accords with sound doctrine on Sundays. But don’t neglect to show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works Monday through Saturday.

If the Lord wills, you’ll speak out against evil this Sunday. Take care that you don’t give anyone any reason to speak out against any evil in your own example today.
