And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. 28 Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

But the New Testament contains profoundly good news that should cause all human beings to stand in awe and wonder. The Son of Almighty God was willing to make himself vulnerable (

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

The point? He’s looking for you to make yourself vulnerable as well.

He told them not to spread the news.

Jesus sternly charged [the newly-cleansed leper] and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone…” But [the newly-cleansed leper] went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter. (
40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

He told them not to spread the news.

But they did.

It was such … overwhelmingly good news!

On the other hand, he has specifically told us to spread the news. The best news.

“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (

He has told us to spread the news. The best news.

But are we?

Are you?

The former leper couldn’t help but speak freely and openly of his freshly-cleansed skin. Jesus had touched him.

The formerly deaf man and his friends couldn’t help but zealously proclaim the news of freshly-opened ears. Jesus had healed a speech impediment.

And you? Me? The stains on our souls that rightly condemn us to hell have been washed away. Jesus has died to atone for our sins.

Jesus told them not to spread the news. But they did.

Jesus has told us to spread the news. The best news. But we aren’t.

Have we forgotten what … overwhelmingly good news it is?

This is kind of a weird question, but how do you write a book? Do you have a method? Are there tricks/techniques/tips to staying on track?

Those questions landed in my Inbox a couple months ago. They still make me laugh, not because they’re “weird,” but because I’m still searching for answers. I’ve written three books and I’ve yet to discover the silver bullets. People continue to ask and I continue to answer, “I’m not sure.”

In response to the e-mail, I strongly recommended subscribing to Jeff Goins’ blog. Today, Jeff released an e-book – You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One) – that will be my simple, go-to-answer when similar questions are asked.

What Can We Learn From Moses’ Sin?

Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the LORD, and through them he showed himself holy. (Numb 20:10-13)

20:1 And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.

2 Now there was no water for the congregation. And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord! 4 Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? 5 And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” 6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them, 7 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 “Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” 9 And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him.

And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.

22 And they journeyed from Kadesh, and the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor. 23 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, 24 “Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up to Mount Hor. 26 And strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron shall be gathered to his people and shall die there.” 27 Moses did as the Lord commanded. And they went up Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron had perished, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.

Someone else may make me mad, but that doesn’t give me license to sin.
Past victories over temptation don’t excuse future sins.
Details matter to God.
Positive physical results don’t mean that God is pleased with me.
God’s word must be properly applied.
Sorrow and repentance won’t always remove the consequences of our actions.
We are all in desperate need of God’s grace and mercy.

The Bible tells the stories of builders, many of whom had serious perspective problems.

Nehemiah stands out among the builders of the Bible because of his profound perspective. This sermon, delivered in the first assembly of the Laurel Canyon church in our newly expanded facility, uses Nehemiah’s example and reminds us of certain foundational truths which we cannot afford to forget.
