Archives For Culture

Our culture and its dialogue are absolutely immersed in two enormous lies.

  1. If you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must either hate them, fear them, or be intolerantly and irrationally prejudiced against them.
  2. If you love someone, you must agree with or silently tolerate everything they believe and do.

These are lies that disciples of Christ simply cannot afford to believe. Why?

  1. These lies fail to acknowledge the objective standard given by our Creator.
  2. These lies elevate our definition of happiness above God’s prescription for holiness.
  3. These lies distort the nature of God’s written revelation to mankind.

This sermon seeks to hold these increasingly common lies under the microscope of divine revelation.

The resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on February 28, 2013 made headlines around the world. Rome is abuzz and billions are watching as 115 cardinals prepare to elect a new Pope. According to Catholic tradition, this will be the 265th successor of the apostle Peter in a long line of vicars of Christ.

But was Peter really the first Pope?

What Exactly is Islam?

What Exactly is Islam?

In many ways, Islam has the attention of the Western world. News outlets regularly feature reports of the spread of Islam’s influence beyond the Middle East. As a result, Christians have questions about Islam. Valid questions. But our knowledge of this world religion must be shaped by more than the political commentary of Fox News and the frequent misinformation that is forwarded via email.

In this short series of sermons, two fundamental questions are addressed.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ISLAM? (8/19/12)

WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY? (9/2/12)

For more in-depth study of Islam, I would highly recommend Night and Day: A Comparative Study of Christianity and Islam, by Andrew Roberts.

A 10-part miniseries called “The Bible” is scheduled to debut on The History Channel on March 3, 2013. Here’s a peek at the official trailer.

“A man was meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth. This has been exactly reversed.”

G.K. Chesterton

WHO AM I - What Will Define You in 2013

Here’s a question worthy of being asked at the end of 2012: From what or whom are you drawing your sense of identity? Your identity is your sense of self–those things that make you, you.

From the standpoint of this world and popular culture:

  • You are a body.
  • You are a slave to your background.
  • You are defined by your relationships, or lack thereof.
  • Your value is determined by your stuff.
  • Your most important asset is your reputation.

But have you considered your Creator’s input? It sounds starkly different.

A Day for Hatred

December 14, 2012 — 2 Comments

Powerful thoughts below from Jen Wilkin.

Newtown Connecticut

Today is a day for hatred.

As I write this article, the death count stands at 20 children. Twenty. Twenty babies who got on a bus or walked out a door or stepped out of a car at the drop-off curb and are never coming home.

Father in heaven, their lunchboxes still hold uneaten sandwiches, unread love notes scrawled on napkins.

For 20 families, the worst fear a parent can know was waiting at the other end of a phone line today. Eleven days before Christmas, no less. Those children and teachers who survived will carry in their heads sights and sounds that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

And what comfort is there to offer them? What words are there to speak? A parent takes every measure possible to protect a child, though we know full well the world is not safe. But this?

There is no spin to put on a story like this. Yes, we will hear stories of heroism begin to emerge over the next hours, and they are stories we will need to hear. But there is no way to soften the blow.

Nor should we want to.

As a mother watching someone else’s horror play out on a screen, I want to feel this to the core of my being. I want it to inform my thoughts and actions in a way that leaves me changed. Because on days like today we learn just how broken sin has left us, just how bleak is our landscape without a Savior.

Days like today give us no choice but to hate. They leave us only with a choice of where that hatred will land: Will we hate God, or will we hate sin?

What About Gambling?

With a record $500 million lottery jackpot headlining much of the national news, here’s a question worthy of exploration: does the Bible have anything to say about gambling?
