He is Awesome; Come and See

Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. (Psa 66:5)

“Come and see.” What an invitation! “Come and see what God has done.” Isn’t this the invitation extended to all of us on this, the Lord’s day? Take a moment to think about how many elements of our assembling together revolve around this amazing, ancient invitation.

As we address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, isn’t this what we’re singing to each other?

Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

As we bow our heads and a brother in Christ leads us before the throne of God above in prayer, isn’t this the essence of “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”?

Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

As we open our Bibles and listen to the preaching of God’s word, isn’t this the heartbeat of the faithful herald of the gospel?

Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

As we observe the Lord’s Supper and remember the angel’s announcement to the women at the tomb…

“Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Matt 28:5-6)

…what an invitation, extended centuries before that tomb found empty at dawn on the first day of the week…

Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

…an invitation that continues to be extended–to you, to me, to everyone–on this, the Lord’s day.

He is awesome. Come and see.
