Psalm 52 is today’s scheduled Bible reading, an ancient poem of David written at one of the most challenging points in his life. King Saul, consumed with jealousy, was hunting young David like an animal. In 1 Samuel 21, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen—Doeg the Edomite—discovered and revealed David’s hiding place to Saul. Eighty-five priests of the LORD were eventually killed because of Doeg’s treachery and Saul’s hatred.
We can hear the aches of David’s heart in Psalm 52 as he laments the pain inflicted by “boasts of evil,” “tongues that plot destruction,” “words that devour,” “workers of deceit,” and those who “love evil more than good.” But by the end of the psalm, David has found solid ground on which to stand.
I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
I will thank you forever,
because
you have done it.
I will wait for
your name, for it is good,
in the
presence of the godly. (52:8-9)
Today, as we worship this same God in the presence of the godly, how thankful we ought to be! As our world continues to be plagued by darkness and despair, these powerful resolutions endure. Even this morning, they are inviting us to calm our spirits and focus our hearts on the Rock who reigns.
“I will trust in the steadfast love of God.”
“I will thank him forever.”
“I will wait for his name—I AM WHO I AM—for it is good.”
May we stand on this solid ground today and worship.
