The Blessings of Unity

Psalm 133, a short song of David–just three verses–is a reflection on the blessings of unity. Unity is harmony—distinct parts that blend together to form a beautiful combination. Unity is the result of being made “one”—different pieces brought together to present a more complete whole. Unity between brethren is praised in Psalm 133 as:

  • Good and pleasant: it is good to be with brothers and sisters in Christ today. It is pleasant to assemble in the name and presence of our risen King Jesus.
  • Precious: in a world filled with strife, jealousy, fits of anger, divisions, and foolish controversies, real unity is precious.
  • Refreshing: Psalm 133 compares unity to life-giving water in the desert, a blessing from the LORD.

It’s no wonder, then, that the Holy Spirit calls all of us to unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, tender hearts, and humility in 1 Peter 3:8. Unity is good, pleasant, precious, and refreshing. Let’s appreciate and promote it today.
