Building a Name for Ourselves with Sand

Genesis 11 documents the construction of the Tower of Babel. Notice the frame of mind described in Genesis 11:4 and the real goal of these people who had settled in the land of Shinar.

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

“Let us make a name for ourselves.” How many of us will approach today with this same mindset? On the job? In the business deal? On social media? In the writing of the blog post? The preparing of the Sunday sermon? “Let us make a name for ourselves.”

When we “build” with the goal of making ourselves look great, we’ve missed the point of God-given opportunities, talent, and life. To act as if we’re self-sufficient apart from God is foolishness. Life without God as the starting point, the inspiration, the boundary, and the ultimate goal is vanity. We may “build” for a time, but we are only building with sand.

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! (Psa 115:1)
