The Goal of Our Instruction

But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Tim 1:5, NASB)

What’s the point of sermons, Bible classes, small group studies, and personal Bible reading? It’s hard to improve on 1 Timothy 1:5 as an answer to that question. The goal is that hearers and learners would develop:

  • A sincere faith
  • A good conscience
  • A pure heart

These priceless spiritual blessings ultimately serve as a fountainhead of love.

The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Tim 1:5, ESV)

The point of sermons, Bible classes, small group studies, and personal Bible reading is to help hearers and learners grow to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind, and to love their neighbor as themselves. After all, “on these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets” (Matt 22:34-40).
