When we describe something as corruptible, we mean that it is perishable or temporary. The apostle Paul focuses the attention of his readers on this principle in 1 Corinthians 9:24-25.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable (corruptible, KJV) wreath, but we an imperishable.
It’s a simple point. Disciples of Jesus ought to learn from and imitate athletes who exercise tremendous self-control. Runners were doing so in ancient times in order to win a wreath that was all-too-temporary. Given enough time, that wreath would wilt and fade. It was corruptible.
Paul uses the same idea in a different context at the conclusion of today’s Bible reading.
Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible. (Eph 6:23-24)
I challenge you to mentally note throughout the day just how much around you is corruptible. So much of what grabs our attention and consumes our energy is just temporary. Houses. Cars. Electronic gadgets. Careers. Social media. Degrees. Hobbies. Sports. Clothes. Even our own bodies are “perishable” (1 Cor 15:42).
But do you know what is within your grasp today that is truly incorruptible? Love for God. “Love with faith” never passes away. It is imperishable, infinite, and eternal.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.” (Matt 22:37-38)
My aim for the day is to think of temporary things as truly temporary and to prioritize above all else love incorruptible for God. I challenge you to do the same.
