Discipleship

Doubts Then, Doubts Now, and the Work Which Still Lies Before Us

Doubt

“Do not be afraid,” the resurrected Christ encouraged; “go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me” (Matt 28:10).

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. (Matt 28:16)

Some doubted. Even then.

Some doubt today.

Despite the doubt of some, the mission of the believers 2,000 years ago was clear.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matt 28:19-20)

Though some continue to doubt, our mission remains the same. We do what we can to lovingly answer the doubts (Jude 22), always seeking to be prepared to make a respectful defense to anyone who asks us for the reason behind our hope in Christ (1 Pet 3:15). But some will continue to doubt.

The book of Acts reveals that the doubt of some on that mountain in Galilee did not deter the believers from getting to work. May doubt in the 21st century not deter us from doing the same.
