A Sign From God to Keep You From Stumbling Today

Trip Hazard SignWe see warning signs all the time.

  • RIGHT LANE CLOSED AHEAD
  • DANGER: BRIDGE OUT
  • HIGH VOLTAGE
  • WRONG WAY

The basic idea behind the signs is simple: heed this warning and serious danger will be avoided; ignore this warning and you have no one to blame for the consequences but yourself. The warning signs have been posted to keep us from physical disaster.

In much more serious terms, God has provided warning signs throughout his revelation to mankind. They are posted in the form of commands, prohibitions, wise principles, and historical examples. By their very nature, they encourage the asking of eternally significant questions: Why do we stumble in our walk with God? What wayward steps lead men and women to fall away from grace? The answer is in the warning signs.

For instance, picture Isaiah 3:8 as a God-breathed warning sign that has stood the test of time.

For Jerusalem has stumbled,
__ and Judah has fallen,

Here is the very thing we want to avoid in our own walk with God, and we are moved to ask, “Why? Why did Jerusalem stumble? Why did Judah fall?”

because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD,
__ defying his glorious presence.

Is the message not simple and easy to understand? Heed this warning and serious danger will be avoided; ignore this warning and you have no one to blame for the consequences but yourself. This 2,700 year old sign still stands and continues to warn in order to keep you from spiritual disaster. It is just as relevant today as it was in the days of Isaiah.

We stumble when we talk and act in unholy, God-dishonoring ways. We fall when we act as if God does not see, hear, or hold us accountable for our conduct.

As you speed by Isaiah 3:8 on the information superhighway today, take notice:

  • Defy God’s glorious presence, dishonor him in your speech or actions, and you will stumble and fall.
  • “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Prov 3:5-6)
