Wisdom: Then and Now

Space clouds

Here’s an incredible thought. Wisdom speaks in Proverbs 8.

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
___ and I find knowledge and discretion.” (Prov 8:12)

In Proverbs 8:22-31, personified wisdom professes to have been with God “in the beginning.”

“The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work,
___ the first of his acts of old.
Ages ago I was set up,
___ at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
___ when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
___ before the hills, I was brought forth,
before he had made the earth with its fields,
___ or the first of the dust of the world.
When he established the heavens, I was there;
___ when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
___ when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
___ so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
___ then I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his delight,
___ rejoicing before him always,
rejoicing in his inhabited world
___ and delighting in the children of man.”

Now, here’s the really incredible part. This same wisdom moves her focus from the ancient past to you and your present.

“And now, O sons, listen to me:
___ blessed are those who keep my ways.
Hear instruction and be wise,
___ and do not neglect it.
Blessed is the one who listens to me,
___ watching daily at my gates,
___ waiting beside my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life
___ and obtains favor from the LORD,
but he who fails to find me injures himself;
___ all who hate me love death.” (Prov 8:32-36)

Before the beginnings of the earth, wisdom was “brought forth” by our creative God. At many times and in various ways, God employed wisdom as he spoke to humanity. Today, in the form of your Bible, wisdom’s words are preserved and she continues to give voice to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Blessed is the one who listen to me, watching daily at my gates.” Don’t neglect to give her the time and attention she deserves today.
