A 141-Year-Old Prayer for Monday Morning

Sunrise Road

___ Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
_____ Forgive our foolish ways;
___ Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
_____ In purer lives Thy service find,
___ In deeper reverence, praise.

___ In simple trust like theirs who heard,
_____ Beside the Syrian sea,
___ The gracious calling of the Lord,
_____ Let us, like them, without a word,
___ Rise up and follow Thee.

___ O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
_____ O calm of hills above,
___ Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
_____ The silence of eternity,
___ Interpreted by love!

___ Drop Thy still dews of quietness
_____ Till all our strivings cease;
___ Take from our souls the strain and stress,
_____ And let our ordered lives confess
___ The beauty of Thy peace.

– John G. Whittier (1872)
