Entertainment.
Money.
Food.
Children.
Fitness.
House.
Education.
Sex.
Clothing.
Vacation.
Car.
Reputation.
Each can be a “good gift” received with thanksgiving from and enjoyed to the glory of “the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).
Good gifts, horrible gods.
Treat them as gods and they will prove, in the end, to be as bitter as wormwood. They were never intended by the Father of lights to serve as gods.
Don’t spoil these good gifts by depending upon them—for meaning, purpose, joy, fulfillment—as gods.
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. (Psa 63:1-4)
