“…women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control… with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works” (1 Tim 2:8-10).
“…respectful and pure conduct… let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit… this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves…” (1 Pet 3:1-6).
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality…” (Gal 5:16-21).
The Vocabulary Our Heavenly Father Has Given His Children
- Modest: well-arranged, orderly, decent.
- Shamefacedness: a sense of shame, a reverence that restrains one from a shameful act.
- Sobriety: soundness of mind, self-control, good sense.
- Chaste: pure from fault or self-centered carnality.
- A gentle and quiet spirit: meek, causing no danger or harmful disturbance to others.
- Lewdness: that which excites or stirs up lustful thoughts within another.
- Lasciviousness: lustful or indecent bodily movements; the unchaste handling of others.
- Holy: separated from the filthy and dedicated to walking in the will of God.
- Godliness: to be like God in our character, choices, and actions.
The Principles Our Heavenly Father Is Teaching His Children
- The exposing of our “unpresentable parts” is shameful (1 Cor 12:23-24).
- Walking in or promoting sensuality is improper (Rom 13:11-14).
- We must not be afraid or ashamed to be distinctive (1 Pet 1:13-16).
- Our influence on the hearts of others must not be taken for granted (1 Pet 2:11-12).
- Modesty is first and foremost an attitude (Prov 4:23).
