What Is Man?

What Is Man?

What is man? Two different answers are offered in the Bible. In Psalm 8:3-5, David exclaims:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.

On the other end of the spectrum, in Job 25:5-6, Bildad the Shuhite laments:

“Behold, even the moon is not bright, and the stars are not pure in his eyes; how much less man, who is a maggot, and the son of man, who is a worm!”

What is man? The answer to that question makes all the difference on multiple, profound fronts:

  • The existence of God
  • The nature of God
  • The testimony of the heavens
  • The origin of man
  • The primacy of man
  • The meaning of life
  • The sanctity of life
  • The conduct of man
  • The transgressions of man
  • The identity of Jesus
  • The salvation of man
  • The outlook of man
  • The death of man

What is man? This sermon explores that question and its impact on the real-life issues mentioned above. It was delivered on April 15, 2012.
