Night and Day: Recommended Resource on Islam

Night and Day - A Comparative Study of Christianity and Islam (by Andrew Roberts)In many ways, Islam has the attention of the Western world. The daily news in the United States almost always features some story about the spread of Islam’s influence. This week, it was the emergence of Mohammed as the top English baby name. Last week, it was the controversial opening of a mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

As a result, Christians have questions about Islam. Valid questions. But our knowledge of Islam must be shaped by much more than the political commentary on FoxNews and the misinformation frequently forwarded via e-mail.

I’ve been researching for weeks with the aim of kicking off a short series of sermons on Islam tomorrow night. Next month, I’m scheduled to deliver a lecture on Islam in another setting. Needless to say, I’ve looked at a lot of books and tapped a lot of resources.

If I were to recommend one book to those who want to grow in their knowledge of Islam, without a doubt it would be Night and Day: A Comparative Study of Christianity and Islam by Andrew Roberts. Roberts is a gospel preacher who works with the Jackson Heights church of Christ in Columbia, Tennessee. In Night and Day, he has researched, adapted, and published a series of lectures that provide a great service to those looking for a side-by-side comparison of Biblical Christianity and the religion of Islam. Quotations from the Qur’an are used abundantly so that students can see the facts for themselves.

In addition to showing the fallacies behind most of the claims of Islam, Roberts lays a Biblical foundation for the truths of Christ’s deity, the authority of actual Scripture, the testing of a prophet, the need for a savior, and the plan of God for the salvation of men. In his parallels and contrasts between the Bible and the Qur’an, Roberts leads his readers to see the power and wisdom of the one true Creator in providing an unmatched and unmatchable revelation of his will.

Night and Day is both a workbook and an independent study resource. With detailed endnotes after every chapter, Roberts provides an invaluable pathway to even deeper study via other resources. Divided into 13 lessons with questions for group discussion or individual reflection throughout, Night and Day would work very well for a quarter’s worth of intensive study.

  • Lesson 1 – People of the Book – an introduction to the study and some key vocabularly words
  • Lesson 2 – With God It’s All or Nothing – on exclusive faiths and the nature of absolute truth
  • Lesson 3 – Searching “Scriptures” – a comparative evaluation of the Bible and the Qur’an
  • Lesson 4 – Establishing Scriptural Authority in Islam and Christianity – considering the sources
  • Lesson 5 – Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and… Ishmael? – a walk through ancient history
  • Lesson 6 – Muhammad: The “Seal of the Prophets” – who was he, and was he a prophet?
  • Lesson 7 – Muhammad and the Bible – was he foretold in the Bible as Islam claims?
  • Lesson 8 – Jesus Christ: Stumbling Block – how both religions look to Jesus
  • Lesson 9 – The Lord Our God is One – is Allah of the Qur’an the same as Jehovah of the Bible?
  • Lesson 10 – Who is Your Savior? – Judgment from the standpoints of the Bible and the Qur’an
  • Lesson 11 – Afterlife: Hell, Heaven, or Paradise? – an evaluation of what happens after death
  • Lesson 12 – Spreading the Word – A Matter of Life and Death? – the role of the Islamic Jihad
  • Lesson 13 – Night and Day (Review)

I highly recommend this valuable resource. Night and Day is 161 pages long and was published by Spiritbuilding Publishing in 2004. It’s available from One Stone for just $8.80.
