Don't Forget To Be Amazed

From the Preface of Hello, I’m Your Bible:

Could I ask you to do something before you turn the next page? I realize it’s probably bad form to ask you to stop reading before you’ve even reached the first chapter, but this is important. I promise. Are you ready?

If at all possible, take a moment to pick up a Bible and be amazed. Amazed at what? At the fact that you are holding in your hands the very word of God. That is a breathtaking proposition, and its importance cannot be overstated. The Almighty Creator of the universe has told us what he wants us to know and preserved that communication in the form of a book.

We often do not appreciate what we have until it’s gone. Where would we be without the Bible? How would we answer those foundational questions of origin, purpose and destiny? “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom 10.17). But what if there were nothing to hear? “Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6.17). But what if there were no sword?

How thankful we should be that “the sacred writings, which are able to make [us] wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” are so freely available in our own language (2 Tim 3.15). How anxious we should be to apply our Lord’s words in Matthew 4.4: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” In the language of Psalm 19.10, “More to be desired are [the words of God] than gold, even much fine gold.”

The next time you pick up a Bible, don’t forget to be amazed.
